Quick Start
Welcome to CacheSense! CacheSense is a “Paperless Geocaching” tool for BlackBerry Smartphones that lets you carry pocket queries on your phone and use a suite of powerful geocaching tools to find caches. The following tutorials will introduce you to some of CacheSense’s many features.
TIP: If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to ask them on our friendly user forum, no question is too basic!
The first step is to load some geocaches...
Although CacheSense is primarily designed to work with Pocket Queries (or GSAK GPX files) that require a GroundSpeak Premium Membership it can also be used with a Basic Membership, the following tutorial assumes you are a premium member of geocaching.com. CacheSense supports GPX 1.0, 1.01 and 1.1 and LOC formats, including geocaching.com Pocket Queries and GPX files from other sources such as GSAK.
TIP: We recommend you enable the GPX 1.01 format under your geocaching.com account settings to allow CacheSense to show cache attributes.
TIP: CacheSense works with ZIP files, you can directly import a compressed pocket query or any zip file containing multiple GPX or LOC files.
There are several ways to load GPX files into CacheSense:
  1. Email: The most convenient method if you have OS 4.5 or better is to setup your Pocket Queries to email directly to your BlackBerry. When you receive a pocket query choose Download Attachment from the mail application menu to save the file to your SD Card or device store. Now open CacheSense and select Import GPX/LOC from the menu to navigate to the saved file and import it.
    TIP: In order to receive the pocket query as an email attachment you must specify 500 or less for the "show me" value when creating the pocket query.
    TIP: Use the “Delete Source File” option to avoid the rename prompt each time you download a new pocket query.
  2. Copy to SD Card or device store: This is the option to use if you are a GSAK user or your phone (or IT Policy) won’t allow email attachments. To copy a GPX or ZIP file to your BlackBerry you can either enable “mass storage mode” so that your SD Card and/or Device Store shows up as a USB drive on your desktop or you can use Media Manager to copy the file to your phone. To import the caches, disconnect the USB cable then open CacheSense and select Import GPX/LOC from the menu.
  3. CacheSense Desktop: if you have an older device with no SD Card you can use the CacheSense Desktop application on Windows to send a GPX file to CacheSense via USB. Connect the USB cable then open CacheSense and select Receive GPX via USB from the menu, once you see the “Waiting for desktop..” message run the CacheSense Desktop application on your PC, browse and select a GPX file then click the “Send to Device” button.
  4. Open from the Web: You can download individual caches by browsing to the cache web page on geocaching.com and clicking the “GPX Exchange File” button, the cache will be automatically loaded into CacheSense. This function is especially useful when you receive alert emails from geocaching.com. You can also open .LOC files from web, although these files contain minimal information they can be useful to download a list of nearest caches, or any other search result, from geocaching.com. Once you have downloaded the .LOC waypoints you can fill in the details by opening each item and using the Website... menu option to access the “GPX Exchange File” button.
